The Pojulu Cultural Festival (PCF) has emerged as one of South Sudan’s most meaningful community-driven initiatives, shaping how culture can be used to strengthen unity and promote peace. Established in Central Equatoria State, the festival was designed to preserve cultural heritage while fostering social cohesion across generations. Today, it stands as a model of how local traditions can be transformed into a powerful platform for national dialogue and identity.
Now entering its third edition, the festival continues to expand in both scale and impact. What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a major cultural gathering, attracting more than 15,000 participants in 2024 and doubling to 30,000 in 2025. Looking ahead, the 2026 edition is expected to bring together between 45,000 and 50,000 participants. This steady growth reflects not only strong community ownership but also the relevance of the festival’s purpose in a changing social landscape.
At its core, PCF is more than a cultural celebration. It is a structured platform that connects peacebuilding, identity strengthening, and cultural economic development. The festival integrates traditional performances with meaningful engagement through intergenerational dialogue, youth leadership initiatives, women’s empowerment forums, and cultural enterprise promotion. It also plays an important role in documenting and preserving heritage, ensuring that cultural knowledge is not lost over time.
The origins of the festival trace back to an initiative led by Eng. Lomora, Managing Director of Point Investment Company. The initial goal was to document and digitize ancient Pojulu memorial songs. This effort brought together elders, cultural leaders, and community members, resulting in the recording of over 250 traditional songs. These recordings captured the depth of Pojulu identity, expressed through music, storytelling, and oral traditions that have been passed down for generations.
As the initiative gained momentum, it became clear that preserving cultural materials alone was not enough. There was a need for a broader platform where people could actively experience, celebrate, and pass on their heritage. This realization led to the establishment of the Pojulu Cultural Festival, supported by a dedicated organizing committee and strong community participation.
Leadership played a key role in shaping the direction of the festival. Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the Pojulu Community, provided both vision and legitimacy to the initiative. He emphasized the importance of preserving authentic history, addressing distorted narratives, and ensuring that cultural identity remains intact across generations. His declaration of the festival as an annual event, along with the recognition of 1st May as Global Pojulu Cultural Day, marked a significant milestone in institutionalizing the movement.
Community mobilization has also been central to the festival’s success. Leaders and organizers engaged communities across regions such as Kenyi, Kupera, Lainya, Mukaya, Wonduruba, and Wiji. These efforts brought together a diverse group of participants, including elders, youth, cultural groups, religious leaders, and local authorities. The result has been a strong foundation built on inclusion, participation, and shared ownership.
As PCF 2026 approaches, the festival is taking on an even greater role. It is not only preserving culture but also shaping conversations around unity, peace, and development. By creating space for dialogue and collaboration, it continues to strengthen trust within communities and reinforce a shared sense of identity.
The Pojulu Cultural Festival stands as a clear example of how culture, when carefully nurtured, can become a force for stability and progress. Its journey reflects the power of community-driven initiatives in building a future that respects the past while responding to present challenges.
